Negotiations
update
Assistant Secretary-General Luigi Einaudi and Caricom
special envoy Julian Hunt arrived yesterday in Port-au-Prince
to coax the Haitian parties back to the negotiating
table. A series of meetings has begun. Yesterday the
OAS and Caricom representatives met informally with
Convergence representatives at the U.S. embassy. A more
formal meeting was set for 6 p.m. today. A meeting between
the government and OAS was set for noon. The OAS's spokesman
in Haiti, Sergio Romero Cuevas, does not foresee an
immediate resumption of negotiations. He says the Haitian
authorities need to establish a favorable political
climate. The OAS will for now use shuttle diplomacy
between the parties. Meanwhile President Aristide is
in Rome for a meeting of the U.N. Food and Agriculture
Organization, where he will receive an award. He may
return by Wednesday, June 12.
